Specification Engineer
Make the next change with the whole system in mind.
Learn to turn a feature request into a precise, controlled change. Understand what it affects, resolve the decisions it introduces and define the expected behaviour before implementation starts.
Included in every subscription, alongside all other released career tracks.
Keep the specification useful as the software evolves.
This track is for professionals who shape new features, maintain existing systems and respond to changing requirements. Build the habit of checking the wider consequences of a request before treating it as an isolated coding task.
Assess the impact
Find the requirements, dependencies, permissions and user journeys that a change could affect.
Resolve the new decisions
Identify unclear rules, conflicting expectations and migration or compatibility questions.
Update the system definition
Keep the feature specification, diagrams and related references aligned with the intended change.
Define evidence for the change
Specify how the new behaviour will be verified and which existing behaviours must continue to work.
A new renewal rule changes more than one screen.
A membership service introduces a grace period after a failed payment. You need to determine the effect on access, billing status, notifications, reporting and recovery.
Trace the request through the existing system, identify unresolved decisions and define the revised flows. Explain what must change, what must remain valid and what evidence will demonstrate both.
Make each change understandable and reviewable.
Practise impact analysis, revised requirements, updated diagrams, acceptance criteria and regression expectations. Build a record that helps the next person understand the reason for a change and its relationship to the rest of the system.
Develop your skills through structured practice, feedback and assessment. Progress follows the track’s prerequisites and competence requirements. Required remediation helps you prepare for an eligible reassessment when more evidence is needed.
Your questions, answered.
How is this different from Specification Architect?
The Architect track focuses on defining the project and its overall structure. The Engineer track focuses on features and changes within that structure, including their effect on existing behaviour and evidence.
Does this include maintenance work?
Yes. Maintenance often involves understanding a changing requirement, diagnosing a gap and defining a safe correction. This track treats that reasoning as part of controlled software change.
Do I have to finish another track first?
Your subscription gives access to all released tracks. Each track shows its own learning prerequisites and assessment eligibility; access alone does not waive them.
